The Department of African, African American and Diaspora Studies (AAAD) offers six semesters of Wolof language, with different classes offered in fall and spring. Fall 2024 Wolof classes are WOLO 401 (Elementary) and WOLO 403 (Intermediate).

For a complete listing of Wolof courses and course descriptions, consult http://catalog.unc.edu/courses/wolo/.

If you’re a beginner (without prior knowledge of Wolof), register for WOLO 401 in fall. Note that this class will not be offered in the spring semester.

If you have prior knowledge of Wolof and want to take Wolof, you must take a placement test. This is true for everyone, regardless of how you learned Wolof (in high school, at home, etc.) and regardless of any test credit or transfer credit you may have. The placement test will be administered in August or in January, once you arrive on campus. Please contact the African Languages Program Coordinator, Dr. Mohamed Mwamzandi, to sign up for a placement test.

For more information, contact the Department’s administrative manager, Ms. Velvet Catoe, by email or call at (919) 966-1295.
