Online Placement Exams

First-year students: If your high school language was French, German, Latin, or Spanish, you must take the online placement exam, even if you don’t plan to continue in that language–unless you have standardized test scores that will satisfy the foreign language requirement.  If you have taken one of these tests but have not yet received the scores, you should go ahead and take the UNC online placement test. Click the link for the language you studied to see more information on registration and courses offered.

You may only take the online placement test once. Subsequent scores will be discarded. If you also have AP, IB, or SAT-II test scores, the higher score will be used for awarding credit. (For more information on test scores and credit, please refer to the Advising Guide for your year.) Credit from UNC placement exams should be posted by the end of the semester.

If you are an incoming new student, you will need to have an active ONYEN in order to take the placement exam. If you have not yet created your ONYEN, click here and follow the instructions.

The online placement exams are housed through Canvas. DO NOT use a mobile device or a tablet to take the exam.

After you take the placement exam, your score will be found within the “Grades” tab on the left of the Canvas page (canvas.unc.edu). Your placement score will correlate to the placement level listed below.
