Dutch
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures will offer DTCH 402 (Elementary Dutch) and DTCH 406 (Contemporary Dutch Society; equivalent to 404) in Fall 2026, and DTCH 403 (Intermediate Dutch) in Spring 2027. Although these courses are numbered at the 400-level, they are available to all students including First-Years. DTCH 402 is the beginning course (there is no DTCH 401), and is equivalent to level 1 and level 2. With DTCH 403 (level 3), the two courses fulfill the Global Language requirement. DTCH 406 is equivalent to level 4.

If you have prior knowledge of Dutch, a placement test is required. Please contact the instructor, Dr. Dan Thornton, to inquire about the placement test. Placement testing may be available via Zoom during the summer; however, it’s also possible you may need to wait until after you arrive in Chapel Hill in August.
Feel free to enroll yourself in DTCH 402 if you are a beginner or have minimal knowledge in Dutch. If you have pre-existing knowledge in Dutch and have not yet been able to do a placement test, feel free to enroll yourself at the level you believe is most appropriate. Should you be placed at a different level, the Department can help you change your schedule in the fall.
If you have been unable to enroll in the course section you need for any reason, you are welcome to discuss it with the instructor on the first day of class.
For more information, please contact the instructor, Dr. Dan Thornton.
