The Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies offers four semesters of Vietnamese language, with different classes offered in fall vs. spring. Only the beginning course, VIET 101, will be offered in fall 2021. VIET 102 will be offered in spring 2022, and Intermediate Vietnamese (VIET 203 in fall and VIET 204 in spring) will be offered next year (2022-23).

If you’re a beginner (no previous knowledge of Vietnamese), register for any section of VIET 101. Note that this class will not be offered in spring semester.

If you have prior knowledge of Vietnamese and want to take Vietnamese, you must take a placement test. This is true for everyone, regardless of how you learned Vietnamese (in high school, at home, etc.) and regardless of any test credit or transfer credit you may have. Please go to https://asianstudies.unc.edu/placement/ to sign up for a test.

If you have trouble getting into the Vietnamese class you want, please refer to the information and help in this registration FAQ: https://asianstudies.unc.edu/registration-faq/, or contact Lori Harris at lori@unc.edu.
