Vietnamese
The Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies offers a four-semester sequence of Vietnamese language:
- VIET 101, Elementary Vietnamese I (fall only)
- VIET 102, Elementary Vietnamese II (spring only)
- VIET 203, Intermediate Vietnamese I (fall only)
- VIET 204, Intermediate Vietnamese II (spring only)
The classes available in fall 2024 are VIET 101 and VIET 203. In spring 2025, we plan to offer VIET 102 and VIET 204, and also to offer for the first time VIET 305, Advanced Vietnamese.
If you’re a beginner (no previous knowledge of Vietnamese), register for VIET 101. Note that this class will not be offered in spring semester.
If you have prior knowledge of Vietnamese and want to take Vietnamese, you must take a placement test. This is true for everyone, regardless of how you learned Vietnamese (in high school, at home, etc.) and regardless of any test credit or transfer credit you may have. Please go to https://asianstudies.unc.edu/placement/ to sign up for a test.
If you think you should be in second-year Vietnamese, you are welcome to register for VIET 203 (though you will have to drop it if you don’t place into that level when you take the placement test).
If you have trouble getting into the Vietnamese class you want, you’re encouraged to join the waitlist. You may also refer to the information and help in this registration FAQ: https://asianstudies.unc.edu/registration-faq/.
