The Department of African, African American and Diaspora Studies (AAAD) offers seven semesters of Swahili language, with different classes offered in fall and spring. Fall 2024 Swahili classes are SWAH 401 (Elementary),  SWAH 403 (Intermediate), and SWAH 405 (Advanced). Spring 2025 classes will be SWAH 402, SWAH 404, SWAH 406, and SWAH 408 (a 1-credit LAC course).

For a complete listing of Swahili courses and course descriptions, consult http://catalog.unc.edu/courses/swah/.

If you’re a beginner (without prior knowledge of Swahili), register for any section of SWAH 401 in fall. Note that this class will not be offered in the spring semester.

If you have prior knowledge of Swahili and want to take Swahili, you must take a placement test. This is true for everyone, regardless of how you learned Swahili (in high school, at home, etc.) and regardless of any test credit or transfer credit you may have. The placement test will be administered in August or in January, once you arrive on campus. Please contact the African Languages Program Coordinator, Dr. Mohamed Mwamzandi, to sign up for a placement test.

For more information, contact the Department’s administrative manager, Ms. Velvet Catoe, by email or call at (919) 966-1295.
