Russian
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures plans to offer RUSS 101, 203, 409, 411, and 515 in Fall 2024, and RUSS 102, 204, 410, 412, and 516 in Spring 2025.
For a complete listing of Russian courses and course descriptions, consult http://catalog.unc.edu/courses/russ/.
If you have prior knowledge of Russian, a placement test is required. (AP, IB, and college transfer credits are usable for fulfillment of Gen Ed requirements, but not for placement in coursework if you wish to continue your study in Russian.) A placement exam consists of a written and an oral portion which help to identify your Russian language level. To arrange an exam, please contact one of the professors listed below (pick any!). In your email, please describe what your experience with Russian is (do you speak Russian at home, have your taken any formal Russian classes, how many semesters of Russian do you have, etc.). If you have not heard from a professor, please wait for at least 72 hours before contacting them again. Please don’t email all professors at once as it might delay your placement exam.

For any other questions about Russian placement, please email the Department’s Administrative Manager, Ms. Valerie Bernhardt.
The First-Year Pre-Registration Survey can NOT result in pre-enrollment in Russian. Feel free to enroll yourself in RUSS 101 if you have no pre-existing knowledge in Russian or believe that your knowledge would place you at the beginning level. If you have pre-existing knowledge in Russian and have not yet been able to do a placement test, feel free to enroll yourself at the level you believe is most appropriate. Should you be placed at a different level, the Department can help you change your schedule in the fall.
Should the section you want be full, please consider other sections. Once First-Year registration has ended, the Department will look at enrollment numbers and consider increasing limits, so please check back in August.
If you have been unable to enroll in the course section you need, you are welcome to email the Department’s Administrative Manager, Ms. Valerie Bernhardt, on or after August 7. You are also welcome to discuss it with the instructor on the first day of class.
For more information, please contact the Department’s Administrative Manager, Ms. Valerie Bernhardt.
