The Department of American Studies will be offering CHER 101 (Elementary Cherokee Language 1) in Fall 2022, and CHER 102 (Elementary Cherokee Language 2) in Spring 2023. CHER 203 (Intermediate Cherokee Language 1) will also be offered in Fall 2022. These three semesters are designed to get you through “Level 3” and to fulfill the foreign language requirement. The Department is currently unable to offer more advanced courses.
For a complete listing of Cherokee courses and course descriptions, consult http://catalog.unc.edu/courses/cher/.
If you have ever learned Cherokee in the past, a placement test is required. Please contact the instructor to inquire about the placement test; most likely placement testing will not be available until after you arrive in Chapel Hill in August.
