The Department of American Studies offers three semesters of Cherokee, designed to get you through “Level 3” and to fulfill the Global Language requirement. The Department is currently unable to offer more advanced courses. In Fall 2023, only CHER 203 (Intermediate Cherokee Language 1) will be offered. CHER 101 may be offered again in Fall 2024.

For a complete listing of Cherokee courses and course descriptions, consult http://catalog.unc.edu/courses/cher/.

If you have ever learned Cherokee in the past, a placement test is required. Please contact the instructor to inquire about the placement test; most likely placement testing will not be available until after you arrive in Chapel Hill in August. If you anticipate placing into CHER 203, you are welcome to go ahead and enroll, though you would need to drop it if you don’t place into that level.

For more information, please contact the instructor, Dr. Ben Frey.
